Water tank
Only 60% of the population has access to clean water. The pump and water tank which supplies Nyamuswa was built in the early 70's, holds only 2,000 litres and was designed to meet the needs of 2,000 people. In the last 30 years the population has grown to be nearly 8,000 people and people now rely on seasonal water sources and have to travel 10 km to a dam. The current tank holds approximately 1-2 cups of water for each person for bathing, cleaning, drinking, cooking, and crops.
The district water engineer has determined that there is enough water in the ground to meet the needs of the population of Nyamuswa, but the true need is a larger water tank and deeper pump.
This is the priority project chosen by the village. The community will provide sand, gravel, and stone for the water tank and is collaborating with the district government. We have raised nearly $3000 to date and every Malaika Project volunteer contributes $100 towards the water tank. Our goal is $10,000.
