Summer '04 - Programs Updates
ZDIF Report - >>Download here the report of last summer activities<< Malaika Project was blessed with phenomenal volunteers who threw themselves heart and soul into the Nyamuswa community to do everything they could to make a lasting difference... 1. Unite for Sight Sachin Jain from Rush Medical College held two eye camps in collaboration with the District Ministry of health, screened and treated over 100 people with eye diseases, and screened 50 people for operable cataracts. He also arranged with Lion's Club of Mwanza to come to Nyamuswa and work together with Malaika Project to provide cataract surgery to restore sight for the people of Nyamuswa and surrounding areas! 2. HIV Program Rohith Malya from Baylor College of Medicine worked with the Nyamuswa Drama Group to improve and create new plays covering HIV/AIDS and social factors in the epidemic including HIV transmission, polygamy, and withcraft. Rohith also gave the Nyamuswa Drama Group bicycles to reach rural areas and he arranged for them to perform twice a month for the Nyamuswa community and surrounding area. They performed at a health fair organized by the volunteers and were also wildly popular on market day! 3. Malaria Program Nirali Desai from Rush University School of Medicine conducted a study on barriers to mosquito net use, information which will be used to develop a malaria prevention program. She was assisted by Brad Lewis from University of Massachusetts and Ellie Marshal. 4. English Education Program Amy Laude from Loyola, Chicago taught conversational English to the community and increased the ability of our local coordinating partners, Zinduka to work collaboratively with the volunteers. 5. Girls Dormitory Marc-Antoine Rivard, Marianne Blais, Yves Leduc, and Ann-Claude Malo-Poirier from University of Sherbrooke, Qeubec worked hard to dig the foundation, make bricks, and finish the foundation of the girl's hostel at Makongoro Secondary School. Walls are now being built. |
