Nyamuswa
Nyamuswa is a friendly small town of over 6,000 not far from the birthplace of Tanzania's famous first president, affectionately known as Mwalimu (teacher), Julius Nyerere. It is situated at the crossroads of three dirt roads heading to Mwanza, Musoma, and Arusha, and is located centrally to 29 surrounding villages. Villagers converge on Nyamuswa once a week for market day, so programs here have broadreaching benefits. Mara region, which is home to Nyamuswa, is one of the poorer regions in the country and few international organizations are working there.

A large tree in the center of town offers shade and the vantage point from which to watch most of the activity. There are few cars and most people travel by foot or on bicycle. The center of town has a relaxed but active atmosphere where local people conduct their business in a host of small shops. The atmosphere is bustling on market day.

The landscape is rolling savannah much like the Serengeti, dry in the dry season, and bursting with green, flowers, and fruit in the rainy season. Most of the population are rural farmers consisting on subsistence crops and small scale livestock raising. Many men have left in search of work, leaving mostly women, children, and the elderly.A secondary school was recently built and Nyamuswa is looking forward to its first graduates in a couple of years.
